Fire eriputed in engine room of Aframax crude oil tanker MARQUESSA in the morning Dec 8 some 17 nm east of Orchid island, southern Taiwan.
Tanker reported fire and sent distress call at 1030 LT (UTC +8), she’s obviously, disabled and adrift. 8 non-essential crew out of total 24 are said to be evacuated, remaining 16 crew reportedly, took fire under control, and are waiting for tug.
Tug according to ships tracks in the area, is already under way, steaming towards drifting tanker. MARQUESSA was ballasting from Laizhou China to Singapore. Again fire in engine room of a large ship, probably there was an explosion, too. How many large ships were disabled or even destroyed by fire during this year? At least five, to my knowledge.
